The Ancient Historian

Ancient history, mountaineering, cycling and other outside adventures

I am a Professor of Ancient History and Classics at Yale University. I originally trianed in Egyptology at the University of Chicago. I have spent my career, though, in Classics departments, first at Princeton then at Stanford for 12 years. I headed back East about a year ago (Summer 2008) and now spend my time between the Classics and the History Departments at Yale. I grew up in suburban Chicago, been riding and racing bikes for most of my adult life. I am a big fan of professional cycling (road racing), have been involved in professional race organization, am an avid competitive cyclist,  a very amateur mountaineer and generally curious about the world. I’ve read a ton about mountainaineering over the years and have recently decided I should be doing something about it. I also travel a lot. I’ll give you my perspective on what’s happening in the academic field of Ancient History and will also blog about what I am following in mountaineering and cycling. In all of this, I hope to give you a sense of why these things interest me, and where you might go to be even better informed. You can contact me at: joseph.manning at

  1. So my blog has made it’s way to a Professor at Yale. I must have done something wrong. Haha. Just kidding. I just wanted to take a second and say thank-you for adding The Adventurist to your blogroll and linking me in a couple of articles. It is always nice to know I have readers out there, and even more nice when I learn some of them are fellow bloggers. Good luck with your blog.
