The tombstone of Michael Rostovtzeff and his wife Sophie

I finally got around the other day to visiting the grave of Michael Rostovtzeff, a Russian emigré and one of the great ancient historians of the 20th century, and Professor of Ancient History at Yale University from 1925 to 1944. He cast an enormous shadow on Hellenistic and Roman history through his voluminous writings and his lectures. His grave, however, in the Grove Street cemetery in New Haven, CT-one of the great historic cemeteries in the US- is rather modest.
